Problem Sets

  • Problem sets will not be graded. Each completed problem set will count 1/2% towards the lecture portion of the final grade (5% total).
  • Problem sets which have significant deficiencies will receive no credit.
  • Each week's set is to be turned in by the beginning of the problem session (exceptions are noted in schedule).
  • One hour each week (scheduled by class) will be devoted to problem set solutions and general questions. This session will be conducted by Mariah Schumacher, a senior chemistry major.

Quizzes

  • Quizzes will feature problems similar to homework problems
  • Quizzes may be taken in small groups, however, each person must submit her own solution.
  • Quizzes will be limited to 30 minutes.
  • The quiz average will count 7% towards the lecture portion of the grade.
  • Quizzes will be handed out on the dates indicated on the course schedule. Quizzes are due at the beginning of the next class period.

Portfolio/Project

  • You wil be given the opportunity to showcase your own particular talents through the submission of a portfolio and project.
  • The portfolio should contain all problem sets, corrected quizzes and corrected exams. Also, please submit a total of four problems chosen from the "additional problems" section at the end of each chapter in Chang.
  • The portfolio is due at the end of written work but should reflect work done over the course of the semester.
  • The project should apply your newly obtained chemical knowledge to something important to your daily life. Project presentations will occur at the end of the semester.
  • The portfolio/project will contribute 15% (see grading options) to your grade.
 

Examinations

  • There will be 4 hour exams and a final exam. Hour exam dates are shown on the calendar.
  • The lowest hour exam score will be dropped. no make-up exams will be scheduled. if an exam is missed for any reason (personal issues, illness, etc.) that becomes the dropped exam.
  • The final will be comprehensive.
  • Use additional problems at the end of each chapter for practice. The solutions for many problems are available in the Student Solutions Manual.

Grading

  • Lab: 33%
  • Lecture: 67% = 20% (final) + 12% (homework/quiz!) + 20%(hour exam) + 15%(portfolio)
  • Class attendance will be considered for borderline cases!
