Chemistry 104
GENERAL CHEMISTRY
Chapter 17 -- Key Concepts
- Recognize conjugate acid/base pairs and identify the acid and the
base.
- Understand the meaning of the water autoionization constant and
its use in determining relative [H+] and [OH-]
concentrations. Recognize that Kw is temperature
dependent.
- Identify strong acids and bases. Understand the implications of
the label "strong".
- Calculate pH and pOH. Know their relationship with pKw.
- Calculate the pH at any point in a strong acid/strong base titration.
- Write acid/base ionization constants. Use values of Ka
and Kb to determine the relative strength of an acid or
base.
- Find Ka/Kb, pH, percent ionization of a
solution given one of those three quantities.
- Qualitatively relate the structure and strengths of acids and
bases. Predict trends in acid/base strength.
- Apply concepts and calculations described above to polyprotic
acids/bases.
