Chapter 17 -- Sample problem
Ranking a group of acids and bases in order of increasing pH
Consider the following group of acids and bases. Without detailed
calculations, rank them in order of increasing pH.
- 0.05 M NH3
- 0.2 M HNO3
- 0.05 M CH3COOH
- 0.05 M Ca(OH)2
- 0.05 M NH4Cl
- 0.05 M CH3COONa
- 0.1 M H2SO4
- 0.1 M NaCl
- 0.05 M NaOH
- 0.05 M CF3COOH
Strategy
Think about how to solve the problem. Since detailed calculations are
not involved some imagination may be required!
- Decide whether solution is acidic, basic or neutral.
- Rank each catagory from low pH (more acidic/less basic) to high
pH(less acidic/more basic)
- Put catagories together
