The images on this site are posted primarily for the benefit of students, teachers, and researchers. They are meant exclusively for non-profit educational use. Visitors to the site are invited to view and otherwise use these images, but there are restrictions to reuses that can be construed as republication, whether on paper, digitally on the web, or in other forms.
These restrictions depend on the source of the images.
A (OC). Images that have been scanned directly from books or periodicals published before 1924:
The sources from which these images have been scanned are considered to be out of copyright, according to US law, and may be reused without permissions. Neither this project nor the repositories holding the original publication assert any right to these images or our scans of them. We would, however, encourage users to credit the original source in any republication.
B (PC). Images from public collections:
These digital images come from websites of collections that make them available for public use and reuse with no further permissions required. Again, we would encourage users to credit the original source in any republication.
C (CP). Images whose creators have permitted them to appear on this website and to be shared, under certain conditions, for reuse:
These digital images are derived from photographs and drawings whose creators have given this project explicit permission to post these images, to which they may have a copyright. This is a non-exclusive license that will not preclude the creators' other use of their images. These images may be reused without further permission under certain strict conditions:
1) any digital republication will be exclusively for non-profit educational use; and
2) such republication will preserve the original credit for the source of the image; and
3) any such republication will carry a notice proscribing reuse except according to these stipulations or by explicit permission from the image creators.
Any other reuse must obtain the explicit permission of the image's creators or other rights-holders, or their designees.
D (RP). Images whose repositories have permitted them to appear on this website and to be shared, under certain conditions, for reuse:
These digital images come from repositories holding rare, unpublished materials that have given this project explicit permission to post these images under their control. This, too, is a non-exclusive license that will not preclude the repository's other use of their images.
Any other reuse must obtain the explicit permission of the repository holding such images, or other rights-holders or their designees.
E (NR). Images from providers who wish to directly control all reuse:
Images for which further republication in any form is prohibited under any conditions except by explicit permission from the image provider or their designee. These will be identified as such by (NR) on the website.
