In the front of the lab room is posted the tectonic map of the world. On this map are numbered stickers that identify different areas of the world in which there are phenomena of geological interest. Below is a list of these areas. You are asked to pick one of these areas for investigation and write a 5 page paper on one or more geological features or issues related to the area. This paper is due the Wed. before Thanksgiving (Nov 22). You will also present the results of your investigation to the class after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Start your research right away by monitoring sites that report geological and natural hazards for occurrences in your area. Useful sites include:

• Earth alert - daily updates on the state of the planet
• For earthquakes
• For volcanoes

Do not postpone gathering materials for your area. This research cannot easily be done at the last moment. If you need help finding materials for your chosen area, confer with one of the class instructors.
