Wednesday evenings
(6pm-7pm for starters; try Park 328)
Sept. 19 to Nov. 28 except Oct. 17
Park Science Center
This is an informal seminar on solving the sorts of problems found on the Putnam exam and similar mathematics contests. I'll be presenting various problem solving methods and tricks as well as providing some problems for us to work on. We'll also go over the solutions to last year's Putnam exam. The Putnam exam is a countrywide undergraduate math exam which will be given this year on Saturday, December 1. It consists of 12 problems that are very hard to solve, but sometimes don't require a lot of advanced math. Students who take it get to see how their scores rank with those of other students all over the country. The fun part, though, is just trying to solve the problems!
Note: You do not have to come to this seminar in order to take the Putnam exam and you do not have to take the Putnam exam if you come to the seminar (but you'll probably want to).
