Carpenter Library has 101 carrels for use by graduate students and undergraduate seniors majoring in classics, cities, archaeology, and history of art. Due to the limited number of carrels, undergraduates are required to share carrels.
Carrel assignments are for the academic year. See the Reference Librarian, Jeremy Blatchley, to get a carrel assignment.
All materials must be checked out at the circulation desk. Do not take books from the stacks and leave them at your carrel without having them checked out. The due date for all materials is June 1st of the following year. Patrons can tell that a book is checked out to a carrel by the June 1st due date in Tripod.
Carrels are considered to be a location within the library. Other patrons are allowed to consult books checked out to your carrel. Materials checked out to your carrel should be shelved so that they are easily accessible. You may keep the books that are checked out to yourself at your carrel, as well as your own personal books and articles, but please separate them from the materials checked out to the carrel.
The Library is not responsible for personal items left at the carrel. Please make sure all items left at the carrel are stored neatly and off the floor. Do not use masking tape, thumb tacks, or anything that would permanently mar carrel surfaces. Beverages must be in spill-proof cups or bottles. Do not bring food into the library.
Only Carpenter materials can be checked out to carrels. You may have up to 40 books checked out to your carrel at any one time. Materials checked out to carrels can be recalled. Please respond promptly to recall notices. You are responsible for all fines that accrue to your carrel.
If you are planning to be away from the area for more than 3 weeks, return all materials before leaving. If this presents undue problems, consult the librarians. If a carrel is no longer needed, please notify the librarians so we can reassign it. Consistently unused carrels will be reassigned. Graduate students should empty their carrels if they are away over the summer.
Once you've been assigned a carrel and have read this agreement, go to the carrel agreement form and fill that out.
