To the Border and Back: Visualizing and Narrating Migration

April 24June 15, 2017

Coombe Suite, 2nd Floor, Canaday Library

Open during regular library hours

This exhibition combines an existing traveling exhibition Del Golfo al Pacific with photographs by students participating in the 360˚ course cluster, Migrations and Borderlands. Students visited the existing exhibition organized by El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (COLEF) in Tijuana and worked with curator and photographer Alfonso Caraveo Castro to consider their own photographic responses.

As part of the 360˚ course cluster, students traveled to the US-Mexican border at Tucson, Arizona and Tijuana, Mexico. Their cultural studies and sociology courses allowed them to critically and comparatively examine migration between Latin America and the United States, especially the interplay between U.S. migration policy, globalization, social justice movements, and individual agency. Their courses investigated questions of imperialism, economic and political policies, xenophobic discourse, transnational belonging, cultural citizenship, and how individuals and families are transformed through the process of migration.

The exhibition and accompanying booklet illustrate a photograph by each student that they have put into dialogue with one of the COLEF exhibition's photograph to narrate what they have learned about migration from their 360˚

The exhibition at Bryn Mawr is supported by the Provost’s Office and its 360˚ program, Library and Information Technology Services (LITS) and its Department of Special Collections.

The exhibition is part of the 360˚ course cluster, Migration and Borderlands.
