Bryn Mawr College Library Special Collections

Finding Materials in the Collections

Finding materials in Special Collections can sometimes be tricky, but there are a variety of tools available to help. Always consult with staff of the various divisions to find the best way to uncover what you need. We are glad to assist you in person or by phone or e-mail.

Books

The Library catalog, Tripod, is the most effective way to find books in Special Collections. Go to http://tripod.brynmawr.edu/ and begin your search. You can limit your search by choosing 'Bryn Mawr Special Collections' from the drop down menu which usually shows 'View Entire Collection' or from the Location menu. For help searching, please ask in Special Collections or write us.

There are illustrated online guides to some groups of books in our collection and we are adding more. Emblem Books, Illustrated Botanical Books, and Travel Books are currently available.

Archives and Manuscripts

There are several finding aids to material in the Bryn Mawr College Archives which may be consulted in Special Collections. These include: partial indexes to The College News, The Alumnae Bulletin, and Bryn Mawr Now, an index to the correspondence of M. Carey Thomas, box lists for processed material, and indexes to the contents of the oral history tapes. For help in researching Bryn Mawr history, please consult the archivist.

Most of our manuscript collections have finding aids or box lists which may be consulted in Special Collections. Online guides exist for many of them, including the medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, the Carrie Chapman Catt Albums, the Henrietta Cozens Papers, Polar Exploration, and the Letters and Documents Collection. For a full list of online guides, see http://www.brynmawr.edu/library/speccoll/guides/. For help searching, please ask in Special Collections or write us.

Art Objects

Finding aids for the Art and Artifact Collections include card files, box labels and box lists, gift lists, and inventory data forms. A curatorial database is available for various collections. There are also correspondence files and negative files, and shelf lists for all items displayed on campus. For help in using these Collections, please consult the Curator/Academic Liaison, Emily Croll: 610-526-5335.
