Who Goes to Bryn Mawr ?
"... We haven't drawn a caricature of the Bryn Mawr woman because her prime trait, as far as we can tell, is a determined (and even cussed) individualism. Bryn Mawr is the kind of college that doesn't even want the groupiness of a Phi Beta Kappa chapter - so, paradoxically, at this brilliant school there is none."
The Yale Daily News Insider's Guide to the Colleges
Among the 1,725 undergraduate and graduate students at Bryn Mawr College are scientists, artists, dancers, mathematicians, poets, environmentalists, musicians, activists, comics, athletes, publishers, debaters and connoisseurs. They may be gregarious or shy; they may come from small towns in the American Midwest or from large urban centers in Asia; on a Saturday afternoon, they might be found tutoring children in Philadelphia's Chinatown, helping coordinate a recycling program, visiting an art museum, seeing a matinee, collecting geological specimens, tracking down original source material in an archive or setting down a vocal track in a recording studio.
Bryn Mawrters are notable mostly for their variety - and for their relentlessly questioning, independent minds. The characteristic they have in common is that they are motivated by intellectual challenge. While much of Bryn Mawr's reputation rests on its rigorous curriculum and its distinguished faculty, its students also find a crucial educational resource in each other: colleagues who encourage each other's academic achievement and never tire of sharing and exploring ideas. |
