‘What have you done for the Earth?’
One of three papier mâché piñatas made by Art Club students for the Earth Day celebrations on Thomas Green. Passersby were invited to eat Earth Cake, plant seeds in containers made from recycled plastic soda bottles, and “think about what the Earth has done for you and what you’ve done for the Earth.” President Jane McAuliffe rode a bicycle-powered smoothie stand; the bike was one of a group refurbished for students to borrow and use throughout the academic year along with helmets provided by the College. Earlier this year, Bryn Mawr submitted its Climate Action Plan as part of The American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. The plan calls for a 10 percent decrease in overall College emissions over the next 10 years; an expansion of course offerings in environmental studies; increased efforts to educate the community on sustainability issues; and more research by faculty and students on topics related to environmental sustainability.
