Day 3- City and Robben Island Tour

Tour Description:
City Tour: Your drive to the city center takes us past famous landmarks such as the Castle of Good Hope built in 1666 by the Dutch East India Company and City Hall, a baroque building and the Grand Parade. As we follow the city's main thoroughfare, Adderley Street, we will see St. George's Cathedral, the Anglican Diocese of Nobel Peace Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu. You will pass the Company Gardens and the Malay Quarter [also known as the Bo-Kaap] which means "Above Cape" because of its location up against the slopes of Table Mountain. In the early 18th century, thousands of slaves from Java, Ceylon and other Far Eastern regions were brought to Cape Town. After slavery was abolished, their descendants, known as the Cape Malay's, settled here. The route then leads to Kloof Nek and the magnificent Table Mountain. Ascend to the top by the revolving cable car. Here, you see wild flowers and the famous silver tree, and marvel at a birds-eye view of the city and its beaches. On a clear day it is even possible to see Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned on one side and Cape Point on the other. Descend from the Upper Cableway station to your awaiting vehicle and then proceed around Table Bay to the Milnerton area (time permitting). From here you can see Table Mountain from the same perspective as the early settlers did when they sailed into Table Bay.

Robben Island: From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island served as a place of banishment, isolation and imprisonment. Today it is a World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant reminder to the newly democratic South Africa of the price paid for freedom. Robben Island housed some of SouthA frica's anti-apartheid supporters including Nelson Mandela.

Described by the local tribe living in the area in the 1800's as 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' - 'the Smoke that Thunders' and in more modern terms as 'the greatest known curtain of falling water', Victoria Falls is a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe. Dubbed as one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World along with Mount Everest and the Great Barrier Reef, it's one of those places you have to see before you die.

About 1200km below its source, between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Zambezi River plunges in to a basalt chasm that is 1708m wide and 103m deep, this is the larges waterfall on earth and marks the point where the middle Zambezi river starts. The Victoria Falls began forming where the Zambezi River crosses a series or east to west sandstone faults. The sandstone in the faults is softer than the surrounding basal bedrock and the water is able to erode it faster. The water eventually finds a weaker spot and eats back into itself until finding the next fault. Overnight: Ilala Lodge (B,D)

You will be transferred to the Kazungula border where your Botswana Guide will meet you. Later, board safari vehicles for an afternoon game drive in the Chobe National Park where you will have the opportunity to enjoy an abundance of wildlife. Return back to the Kazungula Border where they will be met by their Zimbabwean Guide for their return transfer to Victoria Falls, arriving at approximately 18.30hrs.

Chobe National Park, which encompasses 11,000 sq km, is home to Botswana's most varied wildlife. The riverfront strip along the northern tier, with its perennial water supply, supports the greatest wildlife concentrations, but when they contain water, the lovely Savuti Marshes of the Mababe Depression in western Chobe also provide prime wildlife habitat and attract myriad water birds.
