CRETE:
A
WINDOW ON THE ANCIENT WORLD
June
3 – 12, 2005
Featuring
an optional extension to the Samaria Gorge
June
12-14
Dear
Alumnae/I and Friends:
We
are pleased to offer a fascinating program to the island of
Crete, the largest island in the Greek archipelago. Experience
the entire history of Crete from the Minoan culture of almost
4,000 years ago to the islands' heroic resistance in WWII.
Discover the ancient history and contemporary culture of this
thriving region, and hear about intriguing facets of this
island's impressive archaeology from study leader Professor
Richard Hamilton.
Experience
Crete 's physical landscape—8,000-foot mountains, deep gorges,
stalactite-filled caves, vineyards, and olive groves, and
a picturesque coastline surrounded by a sparkling sea and
colorful fishing boats. Dotting the landscape are whitewashed
Byzantine churches, monasteries, Venetian villas and fortresses,
and extensive archaeological sites of the world's most advanced
ancient civilizations. Witness a remarkable sophistication
in the art and architecture at the Palace of Knossos , Valthypetro,
and Phaistos, and in the intriguing exhibits in the museums
we visit throughout the island. Our journey begins in Iraklion
, which offers a rich sightseeing experience both in the city
and in villages scattered throughout the surrounding countryside.
Continue to the charming Venetian town of Hania from which
we visit the archaeological sites of Aptera and Eleutherna,
and observe the beautiful Imbros Gorge. During our unhurried
exploration of this intriguing island, there is ample opportunity
to explore villages, browse in marketplaces and dine in festive
local tavernas .
I
hope you can join us next spring on this wonderful program.
Sincerely,

Wendy
