Requirements for a Major in Anthropology

Required Courses:

  •    Introduction to Anthropology (101 and 102 or HC 103) - 2 courses
  •     Ethnographic Area Course - 1 course
  •     History of Anthropology Theory (ANTH 303) - 1 course
  •     Senior Conference (ANTH 398 and 399) - 2 courses

Elective Courses:

In addition to the above requirements, majors in anthropology will take an additional four courses in anthropology. These courses may be any 200 or higher level anthropology course offered at Haverford, Swarthmore, Penn or other institution. Normally these courses will be taught in an anthropology department and/or by an anthropologist. One of these four elective courses may be an interdisciplinary course with sufficient anthropological content, but it must be approved by the undergraduate major advisor in advance. Students are encouraged to take courses in all of the traditional sub-fields of anthropology.

Requirements for a Minor in Anthropology

(6 courses are required by the College rules)

  •     Introduction to Anthropology (101 and either 102 or HC 103) - 2 courses
  •     One Ethnographic Area Course - 1 course
  •     History of Anthropological Theory - 1 course
  •     Plus: Two additional courses in Anthropology
