The idea of the body has always
been a source of artistic inspiration, and the representation of the body,
in image and text, has always generated interest and study among scholars
in various fields. Our conference seeks to examine the concept of the
body as it is conceived of in both writing and visual image through time.
From the poetry of Sappho to
the catacombs of Rome, the bodies of Michelangelo to the criticism of Winckelmann,
up to the images of Picasso and the performance art of Karen Finley, how
have individuals and society changed over time, and how have perceptions
been affected by social class, aesthetics, historicity and contemporary viewpoints?
