Machteld Mellink's trip
to Turkey, September 30 - October 15, 2003
Department of Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology updated 12/2/2003 From Tarsus we flew to Ankara.
There we met Prof. Ozgen. Ilknur took us into the city where
we met Dr. Bahadir Yıldirim, the Director of ARIT, who accompanied
us to the Ministry of Culture. Thanks to Prof. Ozgen's advance work
we were able to meet (in one day!) with the Director of Museums (Mr. Omer Çakı)
, the Head of Excavations and Surveys (Mr. Melik Ayaz), and the General
Director (Mr. Nadir Avçı). We stayed in guest houses
at Bilkent University, where we met old friends and colleagues: Prof.
Marie-Henriette Carre Gates (AB 1970), chair of the Department of Archaeology,
Prof. Charles Gates, and Prof. Yaşar Ersoy (MA 1989, PhD 1993). Ilknur
hosted an intimate and sumptious luncheon at her apartment for Profs.
Tahsin and Nimet Ozguç. That evening, accompanied by Prof.
Ozgen, we flew to Antalya. The next morning we visited the Antalya
Museum, met with the director and picked up Mrs. Azize Yener, our representative
and the museum conservator, who came with us to Elmalı. Photographs
on this and successive pages document the visits to Ankara and Elmalı.
There are views of the excavation house and the photographs on the
walls of excavation staff, pictures of Abdullah, Hafize and Sadih Aytulum
and the site guard, Mustafa.
