Inspired by Cambodian mythology, The Lives of Giants is a dance drama by choreographer Sophiline Cheam Shapiro, performed by the 30-member Khmer Arts Ensemble and featuring elaborate traditional costuming and classical Cambodian dance. The work uses transformations of movement and costuming to effect degeneration of an epic narrative based on the Cambodian Ramayana and, symbolically, to illustrate the failure of a society due to the perpetuation of violence. Friday, Oct. 22, 8 p.m. in McPherson Auditorium, Goodhart Hall.
"A stunning new program of Camodian dance and music. Shapiro’s journey unfolds like a moving painting. Exquisite." —The New York Times.
