| The office also provides some support for student arts initiatives and information about the Philadelphia and local performance scenes.
Theater
Academic courses and productions sponsored by the Bryn Mawr/Haverford Theater Program provide opportunities to participate in performance and technical aspects of theater, as do Horizons Unlimited and other student-run groups. Goodhart Theater is the main performance space; other facilities at Bryn Mawr and Haverford are available for smaller theatrical productions.
Dance
Modern, ballet, jazz and African-based techniques are taught regularly on several levels; additional courses, such as Indian dance and flamenco, are offered on a rotating basis. Choreography and academic courses in dance are also offered. The annual Student Dance Concert showcases performances of choreography by students, faculty and guest artists; additional performance opportunities include the student-produced Fall Dance Concert and the Dance Outreach Touring Program.
Music
Formal instrumental and vocal ensembles, such as the bi-college orchestra and chorale, are run by the Music Department at Haverford. Rehearsals and concerts take place in the Goodhart Music Room, and students interested in participating should speak to the directors. There are also many student-run a cappella groups and chamber music groups involving students, faculty and staff. In addition to the pianos found in each dormitory, there are five grand pianos in practice rooms at Goodhart; students wishing to schedule practice time should sign up with the Office for the Arts as early in the year as possible.
Fine Arts
Bryn Mawr's printmaking studio, Arnecliffe, is equipped with etching, lithography and relief presses. Use of the facility is mainly for class work and is overseen by the lecturer in Fine Arts. There is an additional drawing studio in Rockefeller. Other courses in the bi-college Fine Arts Program are taught at Haverford. The Gallery offers a full season of shows by students, faculty and staff, as well as outside shows and exhibits from the Bryn Mawr collections.
Creative Writing
A full slate of courses ranging from poetry and literary journalism to playwriting and fiction is enriched by visits from well-known writers throughout the year. The annual series of readings and residencies includes the Marianne Moore and the Whitehill-Linn poetry readings and the Lucy Martin Donnelly Women Writers Series. |
