Interim Head Coach: Deb Charamella

Athletic Director, Kathy Tierney, announced on June 30, 2009 Deb Charamella as the Interim Head Basketball Coach. Charamella brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the Owls’ sideline.

“I’m very excited to be leading the Bryn Mawr basketball team” stated Charamella, who has been associated with the team for the last eight years. “It is a great honor to be able to coach where I played and improve the team in a competitive way, both on and off the court.” She went on to say, “we have a great core of women returning next season and with the recruiting class coming in the fall, I am confident that we will have a successful and competitive 2009-10 campaign.”

Charamella has been the Owls top assistant the last four years and is no stranger to the College. A 2005 graduate of Bryn Mawr, Charamella was a four-year starter for the Owls and ranks among the top in many statistical categories. She currently holds the top spot in three-pointers made (119) and assists (348). She is third all-time with 199 steals and sixth with 934 career-points. She is currently working towards her master’s degree in Higher Education/Post Secondary Counseling at West Chester University.

Over the last four years, Charamella has been involved with three international trips while working at numerous athletic and academic related camps. In 2006, Deb worked with Zag Sports as an assistant coach for a group of college-aged basketball players that played in Brazil. While with Zag, she played an integral part in the selection and day-to-day operations of the group.

Also in 2006 Charamella worked as a counselor at the Friends' Central's Basketball, Reading and Math camp. During the 2006 and 2007 summers, she also served as a coach at the Swarthmore Lacrosse Camp.

In 2007 she led a group of 11-14 year old girls to the bronze medal in Amsterdam with People to People Sports Ambassador. Last summer, still working with People to People, Deb led a team of 11-14 year olds to the Friendship Games Tournament in Vienna.

“Deb’s successful career as a scholar-athlete at Bryn Mawr and the valuable mentoring she received from Katie made her an ideal choice to lead our program,” Tierney said. “Deb’s clear understanding of the demands on an athlete at an academically rigorous intuition like Bryn Mawr, and her commitment to provide the best possible experience to every member of the team will lead to great things for Bryn Mawr basketball. I look forward to working with Deb to advance the basketball program,” she added.
