With twelve athletes on board for the 2011-12 season, the Bryn Mawr basketball coaching staff is looking forward to what the season holds. Returning six from last year’s team and the addition of six newcomers, the Owls are hoping to create a new culture for Bryn Mawr basketball.
“We have a core of returning players that will lead our very young team this season,” stated third-year head coach Deb Charamella. She added “The addition of six freshman will provide a new look to our basketball program this year. I am excited to get to work and set the tone with this group for what it means to be a part of the Bryn Mawr basketball program. The new era of Bryn Mawr Basketball starts now and our hopes are set high for a productive season this year.”
Returning to lead the Owls in her sophomore campaign will be Nicolette Parmese. Parmese averaged 14.5 points per game (ppg), 168 total rebounds (7.3 rpg) and 70.6% from the charity stripe (96-136). Leading the statistical column among returners for blocks (20) and steals (17), Parmese will Bryn Mawr’s go-to player in the paint.
Sophomore Jackie Handy will be providing assistance as a post player while junior guard Aislinn Toohey will be mining the backcourt. Last season, Handy and Toohey averaged 5.5 and 5.3 ppg, respectively, while both averaging over 33 minutes per game (mpg).
Handy led the team with 180 total rebounds (7.5 rpg) and is the top returner for assists (43), steals (37) and minutes played (888). Shooting 42-of-82 free-throws (51.2%), Handy tallied 11 blocks and will be the conductor of the Owls defense.
Toohey, a midseason transfer from Kenyon, scored 80 points in 15 games during the 2010-11 season. Her impact to the team was felt immediately as she connected for 22 baskets from beyond the arch (35.5%), handed out 21 assists, and grabbed 21 rebounds while forcing nine turnovers.
Also returning from last year’s squad will be Taytiana Welch and Soraya Terrab. Welch averaged 2.2 ppg while grabbing 42 rebounds and totaled three blocks in 340 minutes last year. Welch shot 66.7% from the free-throw line, handed out eight assists and forced seven turnovers. Welch will look to fill a bigger role this year in leading the back court. The experience she gained last year and the work she has put in the off season position her to have a standout junior campaign.
Terrab comes into the season vying for a starting position. Grabbing 22 rebounds, six steals and two blocked shots, Terrab will provide help and depth coming off the bench.
Joining the Owls this year will be freshman Quinn Conlan, Holly Constants, Ashton Dwyer, Chantille Kennedy, Danielle Preziuso and Midley Theork.
Charamella enters her third season as the helm of her alma mater. Assisting her on the sidelines will be Alexa Hazinsky.
The 2011-12 Bryn Mawr College basketball season gets underway on Nov. 19, when they host Randolph College to the Main Line for a 2:00 pm contest. The Owls will open Centennial Conference action on Nov. 22, when they welcome the Diplomats from Franklin & Marshall to the Class of 1958 Gymnasium.
The Owls will be home 12 times during the season. In addition to Randolph as a new addition for the 2011-12 season, the Owls will begin a series with Rutgers-Camden as well.
