Each fall, during the first week of classes, the Bryn Mawr College rowing team recruits students for the Frosh/Novice crew. You do not need to have rowing experience to become a member. You do however need to have enthusiasm, dedication and a willingness to push and work very hard. Rowing is one of the few sports at Bryn Mawr College where you can learn the sport and compete at a very high level within your first year on the team.

Some members of the squad may be incoming freshman with previous rowing experience. Other members may be novice rowers ranging from freshman to seniors at Bryn Mawr College. Whether you are looking to perfect your skills as a rower or to try a completely new sport, we want hard working athletes to join our new and ambitious rowing program.

Fall Try-Outs
All interested candidates must try out for the rowing team by performing a 2000 meter erg piece during the second week of classes. During the first week of classes, the varsity rowers will teach all prospective rowers (from novice to experienced rowers who want some technical tips), the fundamentals of rowing and performing a 2000 meter erg test. The varsity members are ready and willing to assist you with rowing technique, questions you may have regarding training, time commitment, tryouts and rowing in general.

If you are unable to attend the try-outs in the Fall due to participation in a fall sport, injury or academic conflict, please contact Coach Bower to express your interest. Athletes interested in rowing who miss the fall try-outs have the opportunity to enroll in the Advanced Rowing Fitness PE course offered in the second and third quarters. Advancement to the novice rowing squad in the spring will be dependent upon your demonstration of comparable fitness levels with the rest of the novice group.

Multi-Sport Athletes
Yes, you can compete for the rowing team and play other sports. You must however complete one season in one sport before starting up with the other sport. At Bryn Mawr, Basketball, Indoor Track and Swimming competitive seasons occur during the winter, which is the off season for the rowing team. Fall sport athletes may try-out after their season is over, but then you will be strongly encouraged to make a choice between rowing and the other sport the following year.
