Varsity Crew Has Best Race of Season; Defeats Marietta College for First Time in Program History

April 14, 2007 – In a Regatta filled with the best of the Mid Atlantic DIII rowing programs, Bryn Mawr placed 3rd in their heat and seventh overall. Coming off the starting line solid, they settled into a rhythmic pace which sustained them through the 2,000 meter race-course. The Owl’s jumped out ahead of Susquehanna University and St. Mary’s College of Maryland early in the race before passing Marietta College at the 1000m mark.

Rochester University won the heat while Mary Washington University finished in second place. Bryn Mawr missed making the six boat Grand Final by four-one hundredth of a second due to faster crews in the first heat. Qualification for the six boat Grand Final becomes a time standard after the first two places are awarded.

The Owls Varsity Crew overcame tough odds to have their best race of the season while competing in the Knecht Cup Regatta in Camden, NJ. Varsity stroke seat Meghan Mahoney (West Berlin, NJ) suffered a concussion the night before and was unable to race. Senior co-captain Hilary Richardson (Ashland, OR/Ashland) moved into the stroke seat from her #6 position while Kathy Dilliplane (Poughkeepsie, NY/Pennsbury), stroke of the Novice Crew filled Richardson’s position as she raced in her first varsity event.

The Novice Crew also had the best race of their season as they finished second behind a very strong Mary Washington University crew. Lead by stroke Dilliplane and coxswain Marisa Franz (Toronto, PA/Humberside C.I.), the Novice established a strong 3rd place position in the first half of the race. In the 3rd quarter of the race, Franz called for a “silent 20” which means the coxswain says nothing for 20 strokes and her crew focuses on the sound of the oars in the oarlocks and the feel of the run of the shell through the water. This tactic put them ahead of Catholic University as they headed for the finish line.

Novice took the silver medal in an outstanding performance in the Grand Final of the DIII Novice Event. Mahoney will hopefully return to action later in the week when Bryn Mawr takes on DII Philadelphia University in a scrimmage session on Friday morning.
