Philadelphia, Pa. - Bryn Mawr crew started their season by racing against the top DI, DII and DIII area rowing programs in the Navy Day Regatta. The varsity placed 8th out of 9 and the novices placed 9th out of 13 in their respective events.
The varsity, stroked by sophomore Jenny Sichel , entered the Dad Vail 8+ category with mostly DI schools such as Drexel, St. Joseph 's, Villanova, and Temple , as well as DII Philadelphia University and highly-regarded DIII Ithaca. The varsity covered the 2.5 mile course in 17:17.30, more than a minute ahead of Drexel, but lost pressure after St. Joseph 's overtook them about a mile into the race. They rebounded with a strong final mile to finish 8 th out of 9.
The novices, coxed by sophomore Kelly Soudachanh , came out 9 th out of 13, finishing with a time of 18:25.30. The novices held off a strong charge by Ithaca for over half a mile, and pushed through tough headwinds at around the 1.5-mile mark to nearly re-take the lead. The long course finally got to the boat, and they were passed by the Naval Academy 's Novice B boat with about a half a mile to go. The rowers kept their spirits up though, and finished with a strong charge led by freshman stern pair Caitlin Schickel and Katie Dahl .
Next up for the varsity is the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston on the 21st, and both boats are back in action on the Schuylkill for the Seven Sisters' Regatta on October 28th.
