Crew Holds Off Florida to Place 38th at Head of the Charles

Boston, MA – The varsity crew held off a strong charge by the University of Florida to finish 38th out of 44 crews in the Collegiate Women’s 8+ event at this year’s Head of the Charles. The crew finished the 3.2 mile course with a competitive time of 19:51.3.

The crew was strong through the first mile and a half, but lost momentum when they were passed by a few boats, including an eight from the University of Florida. But on a strong outside turn from sophomore coxswain Marisa Franz, the crew refused to let UF get ahead of them. The final half-mile of the race was head-to-head with UF, with the Owls finally pulling ahead on a sprint to the line led by sophomore stroke Jenny Sichel. In addition to a strong performance by the Owls, head coach Carol Bower and assistant coach Gaby Cippolone were part of a gold-medal winning women’s master’s eight, run out of Austin, Texas.

The Owls return to Boathouse Row next Sunday to take on Wellesley, Smith, Mount Holyoke, and Simmons at the annual Seven Sisters Regatta.
