CREW TAKES 7th PLACE AT MID-ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Lewisberry, Pa. - The crew, in their final eights race of the year, turned in two strong races to take 7th place in the Women's Varsity 8 event at the 2008 Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship Regatta.

In the first heat, the Owls faced off against perennial powerhouses Marietta and the University of Mary Washington, as well as Johns Hopkins and UMW’s varsity “B” boat.

Coming off the line hard, the Owls originally settled into 34 strokes per minute, staying just ahead of Mary Washington “B”. The Owls and the Eagles were bow-to-bow until the halfway mark, where Mary Washington took a power ten to pass the Owls.

Bryn Mawr was unable to respond in kind, and would remain about a boat and a half’s length behind the Eagles for the remainder of the race. The Owls continued to fight off a surging Johns Hopkins boat by taking a tough sprint in the final 300. This put the Owls over the line less than a stroke ahead of Hopkins with an impressive 6:49.0.

Due to some discrepancies in split calling, the finals were reshuffled to put only the top two boats from each heat into the grand final. Bryn Mawr ended up racing in the petite finals. They went up against Mary Washington “B,” Johns Hopkins, North Park, Richard Stockton, and Rutgers-Camden.

Off the line, UMW quickly jumped ahead of the other boats, leaving Bryn Mawr in with Johns Hopkins and North Park in a dead heat for second. The Owls took a power ten to push past North Park at the 500 meter mark, and pushed ahead again gaining two seats around the 1000-meter mark.

At the 300 meter mark, Hopkins took up an aggressive spring which the Owls were unable to match, falling less than half a length behind. Bryn Mawr fended off the surging North Park boat by calling up a sprint of their own, pushing the Owls past the finish in third place. BMC defeated North Park by approximately five seconds. Overall, the Owls finished seventh place to wrap up an impressive eights racing season.

The rowing Owls return to action on May 9-10, as they travel to the Schuylkill for the Dad Vail Regatta.
