Philadelphia, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr Crew closed its season Friday morning with a third place finish in the Varsity Women's 4+ heat at the 2008 Dad Vail Regatta.
The largest collegiate regatta in the U.S., the Dad Vail, Bryn Mawr's four, stroked by freshman Caitlin Schickel, overcame a headwind and rainy conditions to finish the race in 7:58.235. Their time was less than a second ahead of Division I team College of Charleston. They also defeated Division I University of Pittsburgh by more than twenty seconds. The Owls were bested by DIII Bowdoin College and DI Cincinnati, who both moved on to Saturday's semifinals.
Rainy conditions and rough water made the Owls slower off the start than usual, with stern pair Schickel and junior Katherine Faigen setting the pace. Midway through the race, Bowdoin took off from the rest of the pack, and Cincinnati began to move past the Athena, Bryn Mawr’s V4 boat.
The Owls kept the pressure on and pushed less than a length ahead of Charleston to fall in behind Cincinnati. With only 300 meters left in the race, Charleston took up an aggressive sprint, but Bryn Mawr was able to push through the line less than a stroke ahead of the Cougars.
Senior captain Katie Baldwin was honored before the race, the last of her career as an Owl. The crew team wishes all the best to their seniors, but is already looking towards next October's opening race at the Schuylkill Navy Day regatta.
