BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr College field hockey program is poised to begin the 2011 season under second-year head coach Marci (Lippert) Scheuing. The Owls look to improve upon their record from 2010 with 11 returners from last season and a strong incoming class.
“I am so excited to get the 2011 season going. With the combination of the large incoming class and all 11 underclassmen from last season’s roster returning, we are looking to improve in all areas of the game. We added more offensive threats to our roster and also more depth to our midfield. I am also excited to see the newcomers mesh with the talent that we already have.”
Bryn Mawr lost starters, Laura Alexander, Rachel Brody, Sarah Capasso, Megan Clark and Kati Zaylorto graduation, but hope to build on the strong tradition that they helped start. The Owls will replace them with nine new faces in the lineup for the 2011 season. This year’s returners will be looked upon to make an immediate impact and lead the large group of incomers.
Senior Manya Steinfeld and junior Isidora Armentrout, the 2011 captains, will be leaders on and off the field this season. Scheuing will look to Armentrout to lead the offensive attack with her speedy style play, while Steinfeldwill be leading the defense with her hard-nosed style play.
On the offensive end of the ball, senior Tiffany Olszuk, and juniors SaraJane Rodgers and Caroline Herman, made huge strides in the off-season and will be looked to provide many scoring opportunities for the Owls.
Sophomore Rachael Kahelin and junior Amanda Fortnerwill both add experience and depth to Bryn Mawr’s midfield play.On the defensive side of the field, juniors Krystal Marte and Anna Gibertini will each play a vital role, anchoring the defense with Steinfel.
In the cage, the tandem of senior Elizabeth Toft and sophomore Faith Westdorp will be looked to improve on their goals against averages and provide leadership and experience. Last season, both goalies combined for 222 saves. The Owls were honored by the NCAA last year as the NCAA Division III Statistical Team Champions for saves per game with 15.86.New to the team this year will be juniors Kara O’Donnell and Chloe Weeks, sophomore Brigitta Schuchert, and freshmen Madison Beckmann, Holly Constants, Caroline Day, Mikah Farbo, Hannah Lee, Megan Rongone and Nina Shmorhun.
