FLAHERTY SCORED SIX GOALS AS LAX DEFEATED ALVERNIA 17-12

Swarthmore, Pa.Greta Flaherty scored four of her team-high six goals in the first half as the Owls toppled Alvernia 17-12 in second day action of the Tri-Co Invite hosted by Swarthmore College.

It only took Flaherty 51 seconds to notch the first goal of the game and give Bryn Mawr a 1-0 lead. Jessica Wurtz found the back of the net twice and Katie Kellom went between the pipes over the next ten minutes to push the Owls lead to 4-0. Flaherty connected on three more shots to give Bryn Mawr a commanding 7-0 lead with 14:07 to play in the first-half.

Alvernia’s Felicia Sippel got the Crusaders on the board at 22:32 followed by two more Owl goals scored by Moriah Scott and Evan Schneider. Alvernia then closed out the first-half with goals by McKenna Shafer and Sippel to cut the Bryn Mawr’s lead to six, 9-3, heading into the intermission.

In the second-half, Alvernia outscored the Owls 9-8 as Sippel found the back of the next five times. Scott led the offensive charge for the Owls with four goals as Flaherty and Cara Sogliuzzo netted two each. In addition to Sippel, Shaffer added two goals and Chrissy Paris and Brittany Veith registered one goal apiece.

Flaherty added three assists and Alex Byers assisted on two goals. Scott and Wurtz finished the day with one assist each. Defender Stephanie Wujcik scooped up a team-high five ground balls as Flaherty and Callie Jensen gobbled up four loose balls. Goalie Stephanie Hilton posted 21 saves in the cage.

Bryn Mawr outshot the Crusaders 47-41 and held an 18-13 advantage in draw controls. The Owls were 16-23 on clears and were unable to capitalize on six free-position shots.

The 17 goals posted by Bryn Mawr ranks fifth all-time in goals per game.

The owls finished the Tri-Co Invite 1-1 and are now 2-1 on the season. They return to action on Thursday, March 20, as they will host Wesley College on Applebee Field at 4:00 p.m.
