Collegeville, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr-Haverford Horned Toads started their 2007 campaign with an impressive win over Ursinus by the score of 31-0.
The Toads played a sluggish first half but managed to take a 12-0 in the half. The first try came after fullback Leah Kane Risman tackled Ursinus’ center. Hooker Lisa Grandner and scrumhalf Micaela Dybbro drove the Ursinus players off the ball. Diana Ekman dug it out and passed to Ellen Ginda who quickly passed to Kendra Smythe. Smythe hit space and set up freshman wing Natalie Armentrout. With a quick burst of speed, she took off for a 45 yard try to put the Toads up 5-0. The Toads were feeling good but Ursinus was not ready to roll over.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Bears pinned the Toads deep inside their own 22 yard line and kept the pressure with some very good mauls. Multiple times the Bears were right at the try line attempting to push it over for a score only to be denied by a great show of teamwork and determination by the Toads. Finally, during a ruck, lock Dawne Ballard drove the Bears prop off the ball. This enabled the Toads to win the ball and get it out to their backs. Junior flyhalf Diana Ekman took a long pass from Dybbro who eluded a tackle and passed to Smythe. Smythe broke a tackle and set up inside center Ellen Ginda with a nice pass. Ginda was off to the races. She ran 65 yards for the score. It was a thing of beauty as the Toads actually went the entire length of the field for this score. Ekman made the conversion kick and the Toads were up 12-0.
The second half was all Horned Toads. They came out determined to take over this match. The forwards lead by the back row of Kira Montagno, Tania Melo, and Amy Scott while props Jill Walker and Abbie Higgins started winning the mauls and getting clean ball to the backs. The backs took advantage and demonstrated excellent ball movement with long tries by Becky Harmon and two by Smythe. Ekman made two more conversion kicks.
The keys to the victory were that the forwards started winning the ball in the second half. This allowed the backs to get clean ball. They responded by doing a great job working together to move the ball downfield. Overall an excellent display of teamwork.
The Toads are 1-0 on the season and will host Scranton Saturday, September 22 at 1:00 p.m. at the School of Social Work field.
