Bryn Mawr, Pa. – The BM-H Horned toads devoured the University of Scranton 48-0 in their home opener Saturday afternoon.
The Toads wasted no time scoring their first try in the first two minutes of the match. Freshman Natalie Armentrout took a pass from senior captain Kendra Smythe and raced for 45 yards for the first of five tries on the day. About five minutes later, Armentrout scored her second try with another long run. Diana Ekman made the conversion kick to put the Toads up 12-0.
BM-H were relentless and played some of the best rugby in four seasons. One of the highlights of the first half was a beautiful display of teamwork as the Toads started at mid-field after an ensuing kickoff from Scranton. They won every ruck and recycled the ball quickly. They moved the ball down the pitch with every player at one time or another handling the ball and passing to a teammate. Any fan of rugby would have marveled at the skill and teamwork that the Toads exhibited. It culminated with senior fullback Aley Thompson scoring her first try. Thompson was playing fullback for the first time and did a great job defensively and offensively.
The Horned Toads were ahead 29-0 at halftime, as senior scrumhalf Micaela Dybbro scored and Armentrout added her third of the half.
The second half started just like the first half ended with the Bryn Mawr-Haverford team just dominating every phase of the game. Their rucking and mauling were much improved from the previous week and the forwards were able to get the backs clean ball. The second half scoring had Armentrout adding two more tries and Dybbro getting her second try of the match. Ekman added two conversions. This allowed the "rookie" players an opportunity to get significant playing time against an opponents' A side. Coach Ron Ziegler was able to substitute early in the second half. The "rookies" played almost the entire second half. They did an outstanding job securing the shutout and managed a score. It was encouraging to see how well they played.
The win puts the Horned Toads record at 2-0. They have out-scored their opponents 79-0. Their next match is Saturday, September 29, at home against a very good St. Joseph's team. This will be a good test for the Bryn Mawr-Haverford team.
