Bryn Mawr, Pa. - The Horned Toads continued their winning ways with a resounding 37-0 win over
Lafayette Saturday afternoon on the Main Line.
In a match that the Toads dominated at every breakdown, BM-H started out slowly showing a little rust from their week off. Once they got warmed up, it was Toad rugby at its best.
The Toads first score came about eight minutes in the first half off a ruck. Getting a clean ball, the Toads moved the ball quickly taking advantage of an overload. They got the ball to freshman wing Stephanie Strockis who raced 40 yards for the try to put the Toads up 5-0.
The Toads were now starting to get into rhythm, winning the rucks and moving the ball. Forwards Abigail Higgins, captain Dawne Ballard, and Jill Walker were able to clear the ball and get the Horned Toads on the move. This lead to getting the ball out to Strockis sprinted past a Leopard defender for a 30 yard score. BM-H was now up 10-0.
To Lafayette's credit, they continued to battle and mounted an attack getting inside the Toads 22. However, the Horned Toads back row of Amy Scott, Kira Montagno and Tania Melo kept constant pressure causing the Leopards to knock on, setting up a Horned Toad scrum. The Toads won the ensuing scrum and were able to kick the ball out for a line out. Lock Celia Turner spoiled the line out and the Toads were on the attack again. Consistent and precision passes lead to a third try for Strockis. The try pushed the toads lead to 15-0.
The Toads took the kickoff and moving the ball down the field they came right back with Kendra Smythe scoring to put the Toads up 20-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Horned Toads wasted no time getting the ball out as wing Aley Thompson who ran 45 yards for a try. Montagno made the conversion kick to make it 27-0. Within a five minute span the Toads added a try from Ellen Ginda and Smythe to put the Toads up 37-0.
With still twenty minutes to go in the match it provided the Toads “B” side to get some valuable experience against the Lafayette “A” team. Although the Toads did not score, they controlled the rucks and mauls and kept pressure on Lafayette. Three times the Leopards thwarted the attacks of the Toads. It also showed the depth of the Toads as they kept the Leopards from scoring. It is why the Toads have been so successful this season. A player goes out and there is someone ready to play without slowing the Toads down.
With the win, Bryn Mawr-Haverford's improves to 7-2. Next week the Toads will host Drexel in a Prom Dress Match to raise money for breast cancer awareness. There will be an alumnae game following the Drexel match.
