BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Welcoming back 12 from last season’s squad and a plethora of newcomers, the 2011 edition of the Bryn Mawr college soccer team has their hopes set high and expectations even higher. The Owls finished last season with two exciting late-game wins over Washington College and the College of Notre Dame, and are looking to continue the winning streak at the start of 2011. The Owls open this fall with five non-conference contests, all on the newly renovated Applebee Field.
After going 5-12 overall and 1-9 in the always tough Centennial Conference, the Owls will rely on the experience of their returners and the contributions and depth of the newcomers.
“By far, this is the deepest group of student-athletes we’ve had for soccer preseason. I’m looking forward to the competition within our team to challenge all of our players. With the turf field, and many new faces, Bryn Mawr soccer has a fresh look at this season and the future. The senior class has demonstrated a commitment to this program and I’m excited to see how their leadership will guide the team.”
The Owls will be led by their five returning seniors: Emily Levine, Natalie Mackow, Lizzie Robinson, Carrie Schoonover and Kathi Seto. Returning with the seniors will be juniors Rebecca Joseph, Veronika Mohr and Michelle Wilson and sophomores Lindsey Crowe, Dakota Jackson, Karina Siu and Val Viertel.
Leading the Owls with three goals last year, Robinson’s technical skills will play a vital role in scoring and setting up opportunities for the offense. Mohr and Seto, both with a pair of goals last season, will be looked upon to provide consistent scoring threats. Wilson, who was a spark off the bench last season and limited due to injuries, will look to expand her role. The defense developed a foundation last season in Mackow and Siu, and newcomers will battle to fill multiple positions and playing time.
In the net, Joseph and Viertel have provided great competition, pushing each other to become better and make plays. Last year, the Joseph/Viertel tandem combined for 152 saves and three shutouts.
New faces to the Owls’ sideline in 2011 will include seniors Rebecca Feurehammer, Katie Link and Miranda Gordon-Zigel (abroad in 2010); and freshmen Liz Barter, Kelli Breeden, Tahlisa Brougham, Ava Cotlowitz, Marcela Dorfsman-Hopkins, Ashton Dwyer, Genesis Feliz, Makala Forster, Lindsey Lyons, Sofia Oleas, Leigh Reinckens, Marian Slocum, and Danielle Weismann.
Selected by their teammates and coaches, captains for the Owls this year are seniors Levine, Mackow, and Schoonover.
Bryn Mawr kicks-off their 2011 season when they host the BMC Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 3, and Sunday, Sept. 4. On the Sept. 3, the Owls will play host to Rosemont College at noon while the late game will have Medger Evers squaring off with Sweet Briar College at 3:00 pm. On Sunday, the consolation game will take place at noon followed by the championship game at 3:00 pm.
