Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – On the final day of the 2007 Seven Sisters Championships, the Owls fell to Smith 3-0 to finish in fourth place in the annual tournament.
In a match not indicative of the final outcome, Smith earned 3rd place with a 3-0 sweep over Bryn Mawr. In the second and third games, Bryn Mawr led Smith for most of the match, only to make costly errors down the stretch that enabled Smith to post the victory.
Bryn Mawr raced out to a 9-3 lead to start the second game and maintained a 20-13 lead before Smith made their move. Smith was able to tie the match at 25-25 and from that point on, the contest see-sawed back and forth with the Owls holding off Smith on three match points -- 29-28, 30-29 and 31-30. During these tense exchanges, Smith got exceptional play from senior Catherine Shafter, who had two big kills down the stretch, one to make it 31-30 and the other that made it 32-31. Smith won the second game on a Bryn Mawr attack error.
Not to be deterred, Bryn Mawr didn't fold in the third game. The Owls never trailed in the early stages but in a match that featured eight ties, Smith once again came back with a strong attacking game. The turning point came with Bryn Mawr ahead 17-13. Both teams exchanged in a long, athletic rally that resulted in a net violation by Bryn Mawr. From that point, Smith was able to tie the match at 18-18 and forge ahead to a 21-19 lead. The match was tied late, 28-28, but not unlike the second game, Smith had the whereabouts to close out Bryn Mawr for a 31-29 victory.
Bryn Mawr was led by Julia Harris with 12 kills, Katie Kronbergs with 10 kills, and Elizabeth Sinclair with 8 kills. Three players had double figures in digs -- Sinclair had 20, Ashton Shaffer 15 and Katie Solook had 12.
For Smith, Shafter had 8 kills and Alexandra Risssi had 6. Bethany Weiss had 20 assists as Brianne Connizzo and Mikal Minarich had 8 digs each.
The Owls fall to 9-11 on the season and will take a week off before traveling to Dickinson College Saturday, October 13, for a tri-match with the Red Devils and Gwynedd Mercy. Match time is 12:00 noon for Dickinson and 2:00 p.m. with GMC.
