BRYN MAWR COLLEGE
PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The College offers a broad curriculum in physical education. The instructional offerings in physical education include aerobic dance, African dance, archery, CPR/first-aid certification, badminton, ballet, basketball, cardiovascular conditioning, coaching courses, dance ensemble, fencing, fitness, flamenco dance, fitness, jazz dance, lacrosse, modern dance, Pilates, riding, running techniques, scuba, self-defense, soccer, softball, swimming, swing dance, tennis, volleyball, water aerobics, weight training, wellness and yoga.

Students may also take physical education courses at Haverford College and have the option of taking two self-designed courses or courses outside the College for physical-education credit.

Bryn Mawr's Physical Education curriculum is designed to provide opportunities to develop lifelong habits that will enhance the quality of life. From organized sport instruction, dance, lifetime sport skills and a wellness curriculum, the Department provides a breadth of programming to meet the needs of the undergraduate and the greater College community. The physical education and dance curriculums offer more than 50 courses in a variety of disciplines and ability levels.

Undergraduates must complete eight units/credits of physical education and successfully pass the swim test . The physical education requirements must be completed before senior year*. Credit is awarded for successfully completing courses offered in the physical education curriculum, intercollegiate participation or by meeting a specified standard of participation in a club sport. Also, students may earn up to two credits for a pre-approved independent study. All incomplete work must be made up the following semester. Students may enroll in courses offered at Bryn Mawr, Haverford or Swarthmore Colleges . Transfer students may receive credit for physical education courses completed at another institution with appropriate written verification contained in either a transcript or letter from the Department Chair. Students register for physical education courses during the first week of classes of each semester. Course offerings are listed on the physical education home page. The swim test is offered weekly throughout the year.

*Extenuating circumstances may extend the requirement through senior year.

Medical deferrals or exemptions are given by the Director of Health Services for those who are unable to participate. A medical waiver may be awarded for one course over a student's four years.
