Key Partnerships

Roberts Elementary School

Roberts Elementary School serves about 325 children in grades kindergarten through 4th in Upper Merion Township. The mission of the school district is “to inspire excellence...in every student, every day.” Roberts has a special commitment to developing partnerships with families and communities to strengthen their students’ education. In 2009, the school won its third Partnership School Award from the National Network of Partnership Schools at Johns Hopkins University.

Bryn Mawr College has a unique connection with the Upper Merion School District, as one its faculty members, Dr. David Karen, is a member of the school board. This relationship has helped to foster a variety of other connections between Roberts and the college. Since 2004, these connections have included:

  • Praxis and Education Program students are engaged in fieldwork at Roberts. They act as classroom assistants for 2-6 hours per week.
  • Through the Lunch Buddies Program, college students volunteer to mentor Roberts’ students during their lunch and recess time. Volunteers work with their Buddies to further develop social skills, self-confidence and self-esteem. They demonstrate how to develop friendships, how to initiate play and conversation, how to resolve conflicts and how to be more actively engaged in group recess activities.
  • Teachers from Roberts have participated in the College’s Community Advisory Committee; spoken on panels in various courses; and participated in other on-campus events.
