What: Adelante, the product of a strong partnership between ACLAMO and Bryn Mawr Civic Engagement, is a STEM college access program for students in the Norristown Area School District. The program began its pilot year in January 2014 with a group of fifteen 7th and 8th graders. Through this program, middle school students engage in college-prep workshops and STEM-related activities. With Adelante, this group will develop the necessary skills to not only become competitive college applicants but also college graduates.
When: The majority of sessions will take place on Saturday mornings between the hours of 9am and 3pm and occasionally on Friday evenings from 5pm-7pm. Since the program is facilitated by Bryn Mawr College, at least four sessions a semester will take place at Bryn Mawr. The program also has a strong parental engagement component, and at least four sessions a semester will be for parents.
Where: ACLAMO Family Centers, located on 512 W. Marshall St. Norristown, PA., has provided the community with services and skills for success through their social services, family literacy, school readiness and afterschool programs.
How: Volunteers would be asked to commit to all sessions as well as planning meetings to plan and prepare for each session. Session topics all aim to educate the middle school students and their parents about post-secondary education. Planning meetings will be held when the majority of students can attend, and run for about an hour.
