In partnership with Belmont Charter School in Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr students are matched with individual Belmont students as mentors during after school programming. Bryn Mawr students travel to the school as a group (transportation is provided by the Civic Engagement Office) and meet with their mentees once a week during the academic year. Belmont's after school programming, called BEST (Belmont Enrichment and Study Time), runs Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30—5:30 pm. Bryn Mawr students are matched with their mentees based on grade preference and mutual interest. Mentees are students in grades 2 through 8.
Mentors and mentees engage in interactive activities during their time together and spend the afternoons playing games, creating crafts, reading together, and getting to know one another. Once a semester the Belmont students visit Bryn Mawr's campus and spend time with their mentors eating lunch in the dining hall, touring campus and visiting dorms and classrooms. Becoming a mentor is a full year commitment and mentors are encouraged to stay with the program and their mentee for multiple years, if possible.
