Roberts Elementary School Lunch Buddies Program

The Lunch Buddies Program is a partnership between the College and Roberts Elementary School, located nearby in Wayne.  The program is designed to help students, grades 1-4, develop better social skills and build self-confidence and self-esteem.  Teachers at Roberts have identified individual students who have been struggling socially, because they are new to the school, are shy, or for other reasons.  Lunch Buddies volunteers are matched either one-on-one or in a small friendship group with Roberts students.  They help foster good social habits by acting as a role model and encouraging friendships among the younger students.

Lunch Buddies commit to volunteering for one hour per week during the lunch and recess period at Roberts, from 12-1 pm.  Lunch Buddies eat lunch with their assigned student or small group and engage in activities together during recess.  They might play inside or outside, read books, play board games or computer games, play sports or just talk.

Transportation is provided to and from the school.  Lunch Buddies are required to commit to the program for a minimum of one semester and are encouraged to stay with the program and their buddies for the full year, if possible.
