Course Audience |
|||
|
Chem 103L is an abridged version of the entry-level course Chem
103; assignment into these courses is determined by placement exam
score. Chem 103L is appropriate
for students with strong high school preparation in chemistry (particularly
stoichiometry) but who need to strengthen skills before enrolling in Chem
104. Individual preparation
varies; however, a fairly typical 103L student is one who has successfully
completed AP or second year chemistry but who has no AP chemistry
credit. This laboratory-lecture
course carries 0.5 credit. |

Lecture Tutorial Class |
|||
|
Wed Lecture Tutorial 12:10-1:00, Rm 278 PSB (Chemistry) We will use class time to answer questions and for some small group
problem solving. The single
weekly meeting format means that dissemination of information via lecture
will be rare. You are expected
to prepare for each class by reviewing the appropriate sections of the text
and completing homework
assignments. Always bring
your text and model kit with you to class. |
|||
|
Text, Molecular Model Kit, and Web Resources |
|||
|
|
The text is Chemistry:
A Project of the American Chemical Society published by W.H.Freeman. It is available at the BMC bookshop
with its companion molecular model kit. The model kit is an important study
aid to be used as you work through the text and during lecture and laboratory
classes. The ACS text includes several web resources. Personal Tutor provides examples and practice problems for common
chemical computations that you may need to review. Web Companion
provides supplementary information like video clips to enhance written text
explanations. The Outcomes
Review sections at the end of each
chapter are excellent summaries and should be the focus of regular group
study review. |

|
|
Homework |
||
|
|
Any good chemistry student understands that practicing/developing
skills through ~daily homework is essential. Homework
assignments will not be collected; use the answers provided in the back
of the text to check your progress and bring questions about them to
Wednesday class meetings or office hours. You are strongly encouraged to work with other students
on homework problems. |

Laboratory |
||
|
|
Chem 103L students attend regular weekly Chem103 lab classes. For detailed information about the
laboratory associated with Chem 103L, including procedures for signing up for
a laboratory section, see the general chemistry laboratory web site or contact the general chemistry lab instructor,
Krynn Lukacs. Laboratory orientation meetings
begin the week of August 29. |

Grades and Assessment |
||
|
|
|
Grades for 103L are based on laboratory reports/exams (60%), lecture
problem sets (30%), and class attendance/participation (10%). Though there are no 103L lecture exams, you are encouraged to
prepare for exam-taking in Chem 104 by completing the regular Chem 103
exams. These exams will be
available to the 103L class shortly after 103 students complete them. The exams will not be marked, but
answer keys will be provided so that you can check your progress. |
