Chemistry 113:  Abridged General Chemistry

Course Audience

Chem 113 is an abridged version of the entry-level course Chem 103; assignment into these courses is determined by placement exam score. Chem 113 is appropriate for students with strong high school preparation in chemistry (particularly stoichiometry) but who need to strengthen skills before enrolling in Chem 104.  Individual preparation varies; however, a fairly typical Chem 113 student is one who has successfully completed AP or second year chemistry but who has no AP chemistry credit.  Successful Chem 113 students enjoy working independently and do not need the structure of a formal lecture class.

This laboratory-lecture course carries 0.5 credit.  You are encouraged to discuss with the instructor, your dean, and the premedical advisor any implications taking a 0.5 credit course might have for your academic plans.  (For example, Chem 113 by itself satisfies no division requirements.)

Lecture Tutorial Class and WWU Assignments

Class Meetings:  Wednesdays, 12:10-1:00, Rm 259 PSB (Geology Classroom)

Class time will be used to answer questions and for some group problem solving.  The single weekly meeting format means that dissemination of information via lecture will be rare.  Prepare for each class by reviewing the appropriate sections of the text, doing text homework problems for practice, and completing the Weekly Warm Up (WWU) assignment available on Blackboard.  Each week, the WWU is due at the beginning of Wednesday class.  Always bring your text and model kit with you to class.

Text, Molecular Model Kit, and Web Resources

The text is Chemistry:  A Project of the American Chemical Society published by W.H.Freeman.  It is available at the BMC bookshop with its companion molecular model kit. The model kit is an important study aid to be used as you work through the text and during lecture and laboratory classes.

The ACS text includes several web resources.  Personal Tutor provides examples and practice problems for common chemical computations that you may need to review.  Web Companion provides supplementary information like video clips to enhance written text explanations.  The Outcomes Review sections at the end of each chapter are excellent summaries and should be the focus of regular group study review.

Homework and Problem Set Assignments

Any good chemistry student understands that developing skills through ~daily practice is essential. Homework Assignments will not be collected; use the answers provided in the back of the text or posted on Blackboard to check your progress.  Bring questions about homework to Wednesday class meetings or office hours.  You are strongly encouraged to work with other students on homework problems.

Problem Set Assignments, generally taken from the text end-of-chapter problems, will be collected and graded and are to be completed independently.  These will be posted on Blackboard well in advance and are due as we complete each chapter.

Laboratory

Chem 113 students attend regular weekly Chem 103/113 laboratory classes.  For detailed information, including procedures for signing up for a laboratory section, see the general chemistry laboratory web site or contact the general chemistry lab instructor, Krynn Lukacs.  Laboratory orientation meetings begin the first week of classes.

Grades and Assessment

Grades for Chem 113 are based on laboratory reports/exams (60%), lecture Problem Sets (30%), and Weekly Warm Ups/attendance (10%).

Though there are no Chem 113 lecture exams, you are encouraged to prepare for exam-taking in Chem 104 by completing the regular Chem 103 exams.  These exams will be available to the Chem 113 class shortly after  Chem 103 students complete them.  The exams will not be marked, but answer keys will be provided so that you can check your progress.
