Cloves!

The word "clove" comes from clavus, Latin for nail. They are presently grown in places like Zanzibar, Madagascar, and Indonesia. Cloves are used in cigarettes called kreteks. These are so popular among Indonesians that they must import cloves to supplement their own indigenous crop. Cloves, as well as nutmeg, became popular in Europe after the 8th century.

Eugenol can be isolated from cloves, something you will be doing in the lab today! Eugenol has been used as an effective local anesthetic, mostly in the field of dentistry.
