Research in the Schmink New Methodology group employs transition metals (e.g. Pd, Cu, Au, etc.) to develop new synthetic approaches in organic chemistry. Central to our approach is the use of High-Throughput Experimentation (HTE) to rapidly search the chemical horizon for new methodologies. Working on the 100µL scale (that is about two-three drops of water!), 24, 96 or more reactions can be prepared, allowed to react, and analyzed in a 24-hour period. Importantly, this approach affords us more time to investigate the new reactions that we develop in greater detail. Our group carries out detailed kinetic studies in order to tease out information about a reaction’s potential mechanism. This greater understanding then leads to further refinement in the developed methodology.
