When Friends Are Murdered: The Unintended Consequence of Schools Serving as Emotional Holding Environments
Schools located in and out of high-risk urban neighborhoods serve as an emotional holding environment for students who have lost friends to murder and for the staff that work with these students. The whole school community may be affected by aspects of loss, bereavement and traumatic grief. The findings from and experience of doing a research project on African American teen girls who have lost friends to murder will be presented to
- Tell the stories of African American high school girls who have lost friends to murder.
- Examine how their schools were supportive or not as the girls grieved the loss of their friends.
- Highlight, with a focus on compassion fatigue and vicarious traumatization, the experiences of some teachers, staff and social workers working with these girls.
- Provide ideas of how schools are and can be supportive of the complex needs of students, teachers and staff based on the girls’ stories and the research experience.
