Center for Child and Family Well-being 2006-2007 Annual Conference Dilemmas in American Education: The Struggle for Equity and Inclusion April 12th and 13th, 2007 at Bryn Mawr College - Thomas Great Hall Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania
Afternoon Breakout Session 1:00 to 2:30 Anne Dalke, PhD and Corey Shdaimah, PhD Inequalities in education exist on many levels. Some are easier to identify as when the per capita spending has a very different tax base and amount per student. This obviously impacts resources from text availability to teacher quality and morale to school building adequacy. Other inequalities are much less obvious, even to the people directly involved with education. In this participatory workshop, we use a game experience to illustrate the ways that subtle norms function to create inequalities in the ways students (and educators) can access education. We will discuss the way our group has come to understand the "Culture of Disability" as impacting everyone- even the most "abled" among us.
