What African American Teen Girls Teach Us About The Psychosocial Consequences of Losing a Friend to Murder and About Resilience
Celeste M. Johnson, PhD

Homicide, the leading cause of death of African American adolescents, leaves many urban youth to grieve the tragic loss of a friend. From a qualitative study, African American teen girl survivor-friends shed light on their bereavement, coping, resilience, and other psychosocial consequences of such a loss.

Celeste M. Johnson is a graduate of the Philadelphia public schools, Hampton University, and Bryn Mawr College's Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. Currently at Widener University Center for Social Work Education, she teaches second-year clinical social work courses and Human Behavior in the Social Environment courses. Ms. Johnson’s research interests involve traumatic stress, traumatic grief and community violence in urban populations and grief and loss in underrepresented populations. Her perspective about social work is that these are challenging and demanding times requiring clinical social workers to be trained, creative, and attuned to the complexity of clients, their worlds and social systems.
