Joyce O. Beckett, MSS ’69 PhD ’77 is Professor Emerita of the School of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed her postdoctoral studies in gerontology at Duke University. Her career spans over forty years and includes clinical work in agency settings and private practice, as well as college teaching.
Beckett will discuss the dual roles of professional social workers who are also family caregivers. Beckett’s extensive study and experience of relationships between caregivers and care receivers reveals how demographic, economic, family, and cultural shifts have altered the manner in which caregiving and care receiving now take place in the United States and globally. Beckett will present both the frustrations and barriers of negotiating social service agencies and other institutions and the challenges, joys, and triumphs of family caregiving. She will discuss how a professional education either prepares or fails to equip individuals with the skills for successful intervention on behalf of a loved one.
Beckett’s recently published book, Lifting Our Voices, The Journeys Into Family Caregiving of Professional Social Workers is the only book to explore the dual roles of professional social workers who are also family caregivers. Books will be made available for purchase at the lecture. Please, cash or check only.
Two continuing education credits associated to this lecture. CEU forms will be made available at the registration table and a ceu processing fee of $15.00 collected the evening of the event.
