Increasingly, grandparents are finding themselves in the role of full-time caregiver for a grandchild or grandchildren in the absence of the children’s parents. There are a number of reasons why grandparents are taking on this responsibility including alcohol and substance abuse (Bullock, 2005), domestic violence (Bullock, 2006) as well as a host of other reasons such as death of a parent, physical and sexual abuse, abandonment and mental illness. Recent reports from the U.S. Census Bureau (2002) confirm that grandparents have the primary responsibility for the care of more than 1.3 million children in our country. While the health and protection of these children are paramount, grandparents as parents make tremendous sacrifices in order to raise grandchildren and tend to minimize their own social and health needs. It is clear that we need to expand our knowledge of grandparents who serve as primary caregivers for their grandchildren.
Three continuing education credits associated to this lecture. CEU forms will be made available at the registration table and a ceu processing fee of $15.00 collected the day of the event.
