The nineteenth-century row house met the needs of Philadelphia's growing urban population. Philadelphia row houses were typically constructed of red brick, locally and easily available, as opposed to the brownstone usually used in New York. Built on long, narrow lots, their simple construction and efficient floor plan was easy to market.
