Boarding Houses in 1945-46

Boarding houses were an integral part of the University of Pennsylvania student housing system in the mid-nineteenth century. While freshman were required to live in the dormitories on campus, upperclassmen typically lodged in boarding houses in University City. The modern day aerial photograph above highlights the locations of student boarding houses that were approved by the University, based upon a list from the 1945-46 school year found in the University of Pennsylvania Archives and Records Center. The boarding houses on the map are color-coded by maximum capacity and identified by numbers that correspond with the list of addresses and owners shown below.
