The “old negro” of whom Wilson wrote is James Ekam, who was the antique broker running this small but crowded antique store, as recorded in the 1920 census.  James and his wife Josephine, from Virginia, rented the building from John W. Rehrmann, according to the 1923 Bromley Fire Insurance Atlas below.
